way past her bed time

missed wake up call

On August 29, 2003, Johannas Pope died in her Cincinnati Area home. She was 61 years old, knew that the time was coming and prepared for her death by donning a white gown, draping a towel around her neck and sitting comfortably in front of the television.

Two and a half years later, she was discovered by police.

Strange as it sounds, Ms. Pope wasn't left unattended in her death. She believed that she would come back. For two and a half years, her daughter and granddaughter lived with her body. They told friends that she was ill, kept her remains out of view and tried unsuccessfully to keep the smell to a minimum.

Eventually, the secret was found out. Ms. Pope was unable to return, and now her family can put her to rest.
