Today marks the begining of John Roberts Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings. The 50 year old, blandly handsome, so-not-gay, jurist has been a staunch supporter of the conservative ideology since his days back in the Reagan Administration.

But that of course isn't the interesting bit of speculation that surrounds the fair-haired litigatir. No, the really interesting thing here isn't about his history with the conservative movement, nor is it about the curious international route his adoptive children made to his house, nor the annoying rumor about his (and his wife's) sexuality.

Instead, it's the story that months before he was announced as the replacement for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, he was thoroughly vetted and interviewed for the position of Chief Justice to replace the then ailing, now dead, William Rehnquist. So he was just kinda sitting there, on the bench for the bench, awaiting the death of his hopeful predecessor.

Like some kind of litigious vampire
